The Adaptive Listening Framework

The SAID model: four listening styles (Support, Advance, Immerse, Discern) for intentional workplace communication.

The Adaptive Listening Framework

Adaptive Listening is a research-backed framework that identifies four distinct listening styles. Rather than prescribing one 'right' way to listen, it teaches professionals to intentionally adapt their listening approach based on what the speaker needs in the moment.

The SAID Model — Support, Advance, Immerse, Discern listening styles

The SAID Model

The SAID model is the core of Adaptive Listening. Each letter represents a listening style that serves a different purpose in workplace conversations:

S

Support

Listening to connect emotionally and show empathy. The goal is to make the speaker feel heard and validated, not to solve or advise.

A

Advance

Listening to move things forward. The goal is to identify action items, make decisions, and drive toward outcomes.

I

Immerse

Listening to fully understand. The goal is to absorb information deeply, ask clarifying questions, and build comprehensive knowledge.

D

Discern

Listening to evaluate and assess. The goal is to analyze what is being said, identify gaps, and form an informed judgment.
